Caves, rocks and gorges are the silent witnesses of the cold – they got their strange forms in the Ice Age and from the long, cold winters. Through these landscapes run secret paths that lead to places of ancient rituals and rites. The steep hills of Koli, for instance, are the remains of an ancient mountain and one of the most famous landscapes in Finland. Because this place is so unusual in its wild, rugged beauty, it has been revered since ancient times. For instance, court trials used to be held on the summit of the Paha-Koli, after which the condemned were pushed down from the high rocks. If someone survived the fall, it was a sign that the gods wanted to save this person.
